Paint the Plow Program

Partnering with our schools to keep West Virginia's roads safe all winter long.

About the Program

WVDOT’s Paint the Plow is a community outreach program that invites high school students across the Mountain State to paint an official WVDOT snowplow blade with original artwork.

Once painted, these plows will be proudly displayed on a statewide online platform for public voting and will be put into full winter service on state roadways in your school’s district!

Cultivate Safety

Increase public awareness of winter driving safety across local communities.

Foster School Spirit

Showcase local school art programs, creativity, and incredible school spirit.

Educate Young Drivers

Teach upcoming drivers about safe driving behaviors and careers in transportation.

Program Guidelines & Rules

  • A limited, pre-determined number of plows will be available. That number of winners will be chosen from the voting platform for design submissions.
  • Program open to West Virginia High Schools and High School Level Technical Schools.
  • Execution of artwork may only be completed by students who are enrolled in the applicant school (no adults, teachers, or staff).
  • School officials may direct selection of design but may not participate in performance of work.
  • Students are encouraged to create a design that incorporates general road safety or safe driving messages, while showcasing their school's pride and spirit.
  • May include patriotic, state/local or weather-related motifs, school’s logo, mascot, or emblem.
  • May not include any political, partisan, violent, or lewd messages, and may not have any copyright, pop-culture references, movies, celebrities, or songs.
  • Enamel paints should be used for artwork. A final clear coat will help extend life of the painting.
  • No other materials other than paint may be used on plow blades.
  • Schools provide their own materials and paint.

Additional Information

Because the plows will be used for active snow removal, the artwork will naturally experience wear, chipping, and fading. All participants will receive a certificate and a framed photo of their design, while the winning school will be awarded a traveling trophy and a permanent plaque. Public voting will take place via a Google Sheet linked on our website. Schools will be notified directly if an essay submission is required.
